1960년대 후반부터 1970년대 중반까지 활동하며 컨트리 록과 포크 록의 발전에 기여했다.

《뮤직 프롬 빅 핑크(Music From Big Pink)》(1968), 《더 밴드(The Band)》(1969), 미국의 싱어송라이터 밥 딜런(Bob Dylan)과 함께 작업한 《더 베이스먼트 테이프스(The Basement Tapes)》(1975) 등이 대표앨범으로 꼽힌다.

 

1964년 캐나다 온타리오주(州) 토론토에서 로커빌리 뮤지션 로니 호킨스(Ronnie Hawkins)의 백업밴드 호크스(The Hawks)의 멤버였던 로비 로버트슨(Robbie Robertson. 기타, 보컬), 리처드 마누엘(Richard Manuel. 피아노, 드럼, 색소폰, 보컬), 릭 댕코(Rick Danko. 베이스, 피들, 트롬본, 보컬), 가스 허드슨(Garth Hudson. 키보드, 색소폰, 트럼펫), 레본 헬름(Levon Helm. 드럼, 만돌린, 기타, 보컬)이 결성한 그룹이다. 활동 초기에 '레본 앤드 더 호크스(Levon And The Hawks)', '캐나디안 스콰이어스(The Canadian Squires)' 등의 팀 이름으로 몇 장의 싱글을 발표했다.

 

1976년 11월 25일 샌프란시스코의 윈터랜드 볼룸(Winterland Ballroom)에서 조니 미첼(Joni Mitchell), 닐 영(Neil Young), 에릭 클랩튼(Eric Clapton), 밥 딜런, 밴 모리슨(Van Morrison) 등이 게스트로 참여한 고별 공연 ‘더 라스트 왈츠(The Last Waltz)’를 끝으로 해체되었다. 이 고별 공연 실황은 1978년 마틴 스콜세지(Martin Scorsese) 감독의 다큐멘터리 영화 《더 라스트 왈츠(The Last Waltz)》로 제작되었다.

1983년 로비 로버트슨을 제외한 나머지 멤버들이 팀을 재결성했다. 1986년 리처드 마누엘의 자살 후에도 밴드 활동을 계속했지만 1999년 12월 10일 릭 댕코가 사망하면서 팀을 다시 해체했다. 2012년 4월 19일 레본 헬름이 사망했다.

더 밴드는 1960년대 후반부터 1970년대 중반까지 전성기를 누리며 컨트리 록과 포크 록의 탄생과 발전, 대중화에 기여했다. 1989년 캐나다 음악 명예의 전당(Canadian Music Hall Of Fame), 1994년 로큰롤 명예의 전당(Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame)에 헌액되었고, 2008년에 열린 제50회 그래미 어워드에서 ‘평생 공로상’을 수상했다
