BONFIRE 독일 헤비메탈 그룹 1972년으로 거슬러 올라가 '바이에른(Bayern)'주의 '잉골슈타트(Ingolstadt)'에서 결성된 '카쿠먼(Cacumen)'이라는 밴드에서 시작되었다.
1979년에 데뷔 싱글 'Riding Away/Wintertale'을 발표하면서 본격적인 활동을 위한 등정 준비에 들어가게 된다.
1981년 데뷔 싱글인 'Riding Away'를 새롭게 편곡한 곡을 수록한 데뷔 음반 'Cacumen'을 발표한 밴드는 1982년에 두번째 음반 녹음을 위해 데뷔 싱글 부터 1980년 까지 함께 했던 한스 슈미트 타이슨의 도움을 받아 그가 소유하고 있던 작은 녹음실에서 두번째 음반 'Bad Widow'를 녹음하여 1983년에 발표하였다.
새로운 밴드의 이름은 본파이어로 결정하고 1986년에 데뷔 음반 'Don't Touch the Light'를 발표하였다.

데뷔 음반에 수록된 록 발라드 'You Make Me Feel'은 유럽 지역을 시작으로 인기를 얻으면서 우리나라에도 알려지게 되었고 본파이어의 대표적인 발라드 곡으로 자리잡으며 사람들에게 사랑받게 된다.
