1947년 런던 남부 브릭스톤에서 데이빗 로버트 존스라는 본명으로 출생한 그는 고교졸업 후 광고 대행사에서 근무하며

일과 후 런던 근교의 클럽들을 전전하면서 활동을 펴왔는데 당시 슈퍼 그룹이던 The Who와도 같이 공연할 정도였다.

19세 때 어린나이에도 불구하고 「David Bowie··· Tuesday」라는 앨범을 발표하여 발군의 재능을 나타내기 시작했다.

 

1967년 1집 《데이비드 보위(David Bowie)》를 발표하고. 그해 8월 실험 연극 아티스트 린지 켐프(Lindsay Kemp)에게 마임과 연기를 배웠고,  다양한 캐릭터와 시각적 효과, 무대 연출을 공부했다. 이후 1969년 단편영화 《이미지(The Image)》에 출연하며 배우로도 활동하기 시작했다.음악, 패션, 디자인, 스타일 등 대중문화 다방면에 영향을 끼친 영국의 싱어송라이터 겸 배우로 일컬어지며. 끊임없는 음악적 변신으로 ‘카멜레온’이라는 별명을 얻었으며, 1996년 로큰롤 명예의 전당(Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame) '공연자(Performer)' 부문에 헌액되었다.

 

이후 뉴웨이브, 댄스, 인더스트리얼 등 여러 장르를 섭렵하며 꾸준히 활동하다가 2004년 《리얼리티(Reality)》(2003) 앨범 투어 도중 심장마비로 쓰러져 음악활동을 중단했다. 2013년 9년 만에 복귀해 정규 앨범 《더 넥스트 데이(The Next Day)》(2013년 영국 앨범차트 1위)를 출시했다. 2016년 1월 8일 정규 앨범 《블랙스타(Blackstar)》를 발표했으나 이틀 뒤인 1월 10일 간암으로 사망하였다.
