클래시는 펑크록에 양식적인 경향을 도입했고, (잘 알지도 못하는) 정치에 대한 불만을 더 이상 내뿜지 않았다.

그러니 클래시에게 펑크의 농도를 묽게 했다는 비난을 퍼붓는 것도 이해할 만하다.

그러나 클래시의 걸작 「London Calling」이 녹음된 지 25년이 지난 지금,

이 앨범은 여전히 펑크 유일주의를 반박할 수 있는 비상 탈출구 역할을 하고 있다.

London Calling」은 클래시의 데뷔앨범이 보여준 펑크 성향을 더욱 명확하게 부각시킨 앨범이었고,

Give ’Em Enough Rope」처럼 미국 시장을 고려한 앨범이기도 했다.

조 스트러머와 믹 존스는 펑크와 레게 외의 다양한 요소를 받아들였다.

로커빌리(‘Brand New Cadillac’), 팝(‘Lost In The Supermarket’), R&B(‘I’m Not Down’)가

그들의 작곡에 새로운 영감으로 작용했다. 
어두운 주제곡 ‘Guns Of Brixton’은 시모논의 작품이고,

‘Spanish Bombs’는 자극적이면서도 순수하게 정치적인 곡이다.

앨범의 가장 큰 히트곡은 타이틀트랙이다. 갈라진 베이스 라인과 슬라이싱 기타,

목청이 터져라 외치는 보컬을 담은 이 곡은 클래시 최고의 히트곡이 되었다.
